Help End Live Pig Lab at University of Rochester

From PCRM www.pcrm.org :

Can you help us end live pig labs at the University of Rochester School of Medicine? Twenty years ago, live animals such as goats, pigs, and dogs were commonly used in physiology, pharmacology, and surgery classes at medical schools. A standard lab involved anesthetizing the animal, followed by injecting pharmaceuticals or practicing surgical techniques. After the class, the animal was killed.

Today, as the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle just revealed, the University of Rochester School of Medicine is one of a handful of medical schools that still use animals in these cruel and unnecessary exercises. Read the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle article on the University of Rochesters live pig lab.

Fortunately, most schools have eliminated live animal labs from their curriculum altogether. Innovations in medical simulation technology, availability of alternatives, increased awareness of ethical concerns, and a growing acknowledgement that medical training must be human-focused have all facilitated this shift.

Please e-mail or send a letter to the dean of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and urge him to immediately end the use of live pigs in the surgery course.
