Cruelty of Carriage Rides

Letter to the Editor, NY Daily News
September 7, 2012

Tuckahoe: Before you take a NYC carriage horse ride, take a good look at the horse, who is shackled from head to toe: A metal plate in his mouth is attached to a series of bolts, straps and blinders that entirely circle his face; yanking on the straps directs him; a neck brace and 2 heavy planks shackle him to the appx.  800 lbs of weight which he drags for long hours through exhaust fumes, honking cars, screaming drivers, heat, cold, etc.  A whip is always near his head.

When he can no longer work he will likely be sent to slaughter - this is a business.

Would you switch places with him?  Keep your money. This is not 'historical' or 'Americana' - it is cruelty and shouldn't be patronized.
