Mamaroneck needs better fix for geese

Letter to the editor published in The Journal News
March 15, 2013

Re Nonlethal solutions to geese urged, March 12 article

I attended the Town of Mamaroneck meeting on March 11 that was an opportunity for interested people to speak on behalf of the Canada geese that community leaders have decided should be cruelly captured and killed by gas.

It was painful to see the way that these intelligent guests and people who lived in this community were treated. Instead of allowing a two-minute opportunity to speak, it was unexpectedly cut to one brief moment. All pleaded to allow tried and true methods to discourage the geese from settling on the property that the town wants them to abandon all methods have worked in other areas. Many reasons were given, both humane and personal opinions and all speakers were respectful and their belief in kindness apparent and welcomed by nearly 100 percent of those of us in attendance.

To cruelly capture 500 living creatures who are merely doing what nature dictates, and transport them creating extreme fear and discomfort, then gas them to death, is something that will put our delightful community in a category of allowing slaughter of innocents. Most humane people emphatically reject this plan and should these politicians continue to support this, I think it will bring them very bad results come election time.

Hopefully the residents of Mamaroneck town, village and Larchmont will be against this horrible example being set for our children. It is my hope that the many lessons learned that killing is never the proper solution to any problem when better solutions are readily available.
