(June 6, 2013) MAMARONECK - Mamaroneck's solution to its Canadian geese problem is getting a thumbs up from animal rights activists. The village had considered killing the birds in public parks because of all the unwanted droppings they leave behind prompting complaints from animal rights activists. "There are humane dispersal methods that are available. You don't kill an animal because it poops!" says Kiley Blackman, of Westchester 4 Geese. So the village had the USDA coat goose eggs with oil to keep them from developing and hatching. "We oiled, during three visits, 95 eggs in about two dozen nests or so, and so we've greatly reduced the population of goslings," says Village Administrator Richard Slingerland. In the future, the village will be bringing in a contractor to chase the geese from the parks.
