Articles Gov. Cuomo signs law making New York the 8th state to ban shark fin trade From NY DailyNews.com Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation on Friday to make New York the eighth state in the nation to ban the shark fin trade. Every year, an estimated 73 million sharks are killed to supply the growing global demand for their fins, Cuomo said in a statement. Not only is the process inhumane, but it also affects the natural balance of the oceanic ecosystem. With this new law, New York will be doing its part to help preserve this important species and maintain a stable environment for them. After California passed its own law banning the sale and possession of shark fins earlier this year, New York, with its large Chinese population, became the de facto capital of the industry in the United States. Environmental groups lobbied members of the legislature as well as the governors office in order to bring attention to the plight of the sharks.
