Control population without violence Published in THE JOURNAL NEWS
I'm disappointed, but not surprised, to see yet another pro-hunting piece
in The Journal News (Friday editorial). Or should I say "anti-deer"? It's
the same propaganda all over again: "There are just so many deer! We have to
kill them - and with bows and arrows!" This time the drivel has a new spin:
"The deer are eating all the other animals' food! Let's get 'em!" (As if
hunters care about other wildlife). Okay, let's say we do have a deer overpopulation problem. Naturally, it
will never compete with rampant human overpopulation, but still. We'd rather
not talk about the prolific propagation of our own species. So how do we
solve it? With violence? By slaying these gentle animals with fiberglass
arrows, which often cause excruciatingly painful hemorrhaging and a slow
death for the victims? Have we forgotten that there are drugs available that
have been shown effective in controlling deer fertility rates (such as PZP
immunocontraception)? Could we be basing policy decisions on pure
blood-thirst and an effort to please pro-hunting lobbyists? As I write this letter, I hear coyotes singing in the background - the
last left in White Plains. I have no doubt that the same hunters would
gladly shoot these beautiful creatures through the heart, too. After all,
isn't that why the deer are so overpopulated? Because we wiped out most of
their natural predators with our short-sightedness and land-greediness in
the past? Allison Solin Fair Use Notice: This document may contain
