Stop Laboratory Testing on Animals

 Mouse-breeding facility inhumane

THE JOURNAL NEWS - 9/28/06

We are calling on Sen. Nicholas Spano and Gov. George Pataki to immediately withdraw plans to build a mouse-breeding facility in Yonkers (Sept. 14 Business story), which will turn these innocent beings over to research laboratories.

These two are using $10 million in taxpayer money for this project. Gov. Pataki recently gave considerable taxpayer money to local foie gras purveyors, which caused him to be sued by the Humane Society of the U.S.

Facilities like this are always located in poor and indigent areas, never in places like Scarsdale or other tony addresses. Since Yonkers is supposedly attempting gentrification, why is Mayor Phil Amicone allowing Spano to spit in our faces with a facility that screams urban blight and poverty? Isn't there enough violence here without adding to the suffering? We'd like to know why this was kept a secret until the deal was done. We'd also like to know exactly who is overseeing these questionable grants of our hard-earned taxes.

Not only is animal testing bad science (Read "Sacred Cows and Golden Geese" by former researcher Dr. Ray Greek for more info); the mice victims are friendly, clean, intelligent, inquisitive little beings who hurt no one.

In the supermarket recently I heard a small child ask his mother what the mouse traps were for. She told him they killed mice. This precious youngster said "Why would anyone want to hurt a little mouse?" Why indeed, Sen. Spano? To see exactly what the results of Spano's torture chamber will bring, visit Peta.org.
