Campaigns Don't exploit animals through rodeos Published in the Daily Democrat 06/30/2006 The city of Woodland needs to consider prohibiting any activities that
exploit animals or have the potential to inflict injury. Animal events or
practices that are inherently cruel (tripping, calf roping, flank straps,
spurring, electronic prods, etc.) have no business being sanctioned or
promoted by a public agency. Unfortunately there are plenty of private
groups that will do the deed and assume the obligatory posture of remorse
for injury or death to the animals that may occur. Whether it is charreada or rodeo, the cruel exploitation of animals, who
are the unwilling participants, should not be condoned by the city of
Woodland. The correlation between animal abuse and human abuse has been well
documented and proven. Rodeos (and charreada) are prime examples of
activities that engrain in minds the concepts of inflicting suffering,
dominance, accompanied by a lack of concern or compassion. Please urge
Woodland decision makers to NOT drag Woodland into long-term social and
criminal consequences that these types of events can germinate. Insist that Woodland officials consider sanctioning only events and
activities that do NOT endanger lives and well being of any animals. Public
attitudes toward the treatment of all animals is changing - cruelty is
considered not only barbaric, but also abominable and criminal by the vast
majority. Only healthy alternatives that do not involve animals would be
appropriate for a public agency to support. Marilyn Jasper, Loomis Fair Use Notice: This document may contain
