To the Editor:

I'd like to add a few points to your article about the effort to avoid further killing of geese at the Sprain Golf Course ('Goosinator to help County' 11/28).  The initial slaughter provoked an outpouring of controversy and disdain from the public.  Subsequently there was a wonderful effort between the County and several local animal advocates who, working together, came up with a plan to avoid more killings - indeed, the County went beyond our recommendations by discovering the 'Goosinator,' which we were unaware of.

The fact is that the cost to the county per slaughter is over $5000; the Goosinator costs less than half of one per-slaughter effort,  is a one-time expenditure, and should last for several years.  In addition,  this effort was not the result of one person alone, but rather of a coalition of intelligent, knowledgeable animal advocates,  who volunteered their time and expertise to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.

As taxpayers and voters, we appreciate the hard work the county has done to achieve a decent resolution to the humane concerns many areas are dealing with.  The world is different nowadays: People enjoy seeing wildlife, respect them and don't want to see them needlessly killed, for a sporting event or anything else, especially as we head into the season of peace on earth and good will toward all.
