Letters Horse racing is cruel Published in the TIMES HERALD RECORD
WWW.RECORDONLINE.COM 6/3/06:
I was appalled when I read your pro-horse-racing article, which depicts
horse racing in such an inaccurate light that it is borderline delusional.
The author views horse racing through rose-glazed lenses, to say the least.
Horse racing is a cruel and heartless sport that forces these beautiful
creatures to ends that are beyond "fun and games." It may be true that
racehorses are given some of the best care - while they are still a good
investment! Once a horse is too old or damaged, they are often times
discarded like a piece of trash. If you led a horse that has yet to be brainwashed by its managers out
onto a racetrack and gave it the option to race around in circles like a
lunatic or to trot out through the open fence to roll around in the grass,
which way do you think that horse is going to head? Forcing a horse to run
at their body's physical breaking point, 'round and 'round, until they come
to that pivotal, painful moment when their bones start cracking and popping
or their heart gives way or their lungs burst inside of their chest, is far
from natural and far from kind. Kimberly Sue Desio Bronxville
