Stop blaming, demonizing animals

Letter to the Editor as published on The Journal News
July 5, 2015

The Journal News/lohud has taken an appalling turn concerning animal issues; I believe it is time for to make a conciliatory effort in response to your recent articles about animals:

  • A misleading photo of a suffering coyote in a trap, to go with a report on coyotes "roaming."
  • A headline about actor Bruce Willis' wife finding a "scary" animal.
  • Biased articles about encroaching deer.
  • Stilted click bait about "1,200 animal attacks in region."

Such coverage of animals is inflammatory, unfair and designed to sell papers.

We are totally removed from the natural world we've plundered. Then we try to blame the animals and bizarrely resent them for trying to live here. They were here first.

The press can perpetuate our bullying of animals, repeat the false, inflammatory misinformation, encourage people to scapegoat animals. Or the press can help change the world for the betterment of all, toward humane evolution.

Lohud speaks up for human rights. I expect and demand the same respect for all sentient beings, who have the right to peacefully share this earth.
