Tuckahoe, N.Y.: A wild bear “on the loose” who “rampaged” and “invaded” a barracks (”Bear shot dead in Japan after 8-hour rampage that left 4 injured,” June 18). Was there any demonizing clickbait term you forgot? He was actually seen near residences? Oh, the horror. The real horror is that we have forced wildlife out of their own homes, then we hate them for struggling to exist.
This frightened animal “injured” people by pushing out of the way those who approached him — and when he finally found his way into the forest, he was pursued and killed. No attempt was ever made to deal with him humanely. The animals have it tough enough in this world. Don’t make it worse for them.
As humans take over every square inch of this Earth, we must learn how to respect and coexist with all of the planet’s inhabitants or we have failed as its stewards.
