Tuckahoe, N.Y.: Media pundits have used California’s failed wildlife crossing bridge effort to mock all such bridges as millions spent on the bet that some wildlife may figure out how to use a 165-foot-wide bridge to cross more than 2.7 million feet of Los Angeles freeway. These crossings — contrary to Gov. Gavin Newsom’s debacle — are extremely effective at reducing wildlife/car collisions by up to 97%, and all have cost far less than Newsom’s bloated cost. According to the Pew Research Center and numerous other studies, one crossing can prevent roughly 1,400 accidents over a 70-year lifespan, saving billions of dollars in potential damages. Recording equipment at the sites for several years show a parade of thousands of animals, such as elk, moose, bears and even frogs. After 25 years and billions in subsidies, not a single California high-speed train is functioning, but we don’t condemn all railroads.
