Moo-ving people toward compassionate living
From Lee Ritter - 22 April 2003
I appreciate your efforts to help increase awareness of animal cruelty, however don't you think it is quite a leap to compare these practices to the eating of humanely butchered beef and chickens?
Humans and many other animals are carnivores. Many creatures' teeth and digestive systems are intended to eat meat. Eating meat is part of nature and the circle of life.
I don't understand the point you are trying to make when you are addressing beef and poultry. Would you suggest we just open the gates on all of our fields and barns and set all the cattle, pigs and chickens free?
Thank you very much for your email and comments.
The problem is that there doesn't seem to be any commercial slaughterhouses that humanely kill animals. Additionally, the vast majority of farmed animals suffer greatly during their lifetimes. It's this cruelty that we are trying to stop, and we know of no other way than to stop eating animal flesh and by-products.
It's interesting that your said, "Humans and many other animals are carnivores. Many creatures' teeth and digestive systems are intended to eat meat." Actually, humans are not designed to ear meat. Our teeth and digestive system are designed more like fruit eaters (fruitivores).
All the animals you mention are force bred. If we stopped breeding them, their number would shrink very rapidly. Since such a thing would not happen over night, the switch from animal agriculture to plant agriculture would naturally reduce the animal populations, and once again those that remain would be treated humanely.
Please don't deny the truth.
