Dedicated to Wolves, Lynx, Grizzly Bears, other
Predators and their Habitat, this Coalition has been reestablished to
network and join with all organizations that are battling to protect
predators and to promote and support those efforts.
Since we established the Gray Wolf Coalition, it has
become increasingly obvious that our efforts to protect the wolf were
confronting many of the same problems, attitudes, threats, and excuses
that were being used to persecute other predators. Several species now
seem to be targeted for assault and persecution. We see a growing need
to join forces in solidarity against the Animal Damage Control Program
(Wildlife Services), increased trapping, and bad management by
government agencies.
This Coalition is not designed to replace existing
predator groups. We welcome your opinions and rely on your expertise.
After the offensive positions taken against the wolf by
the Minnesota State Legislature, revealed their lack of will to properly
provide for stewardship of the wolf, and after the violation by ranchers
proved the Round table nonproductive, we determined that we need to take
a harder stand. Deals cannot be made that allow for the 365 day open
season on wolves by landowners. Deals cannot be made that promote the
reduction of the population to the arbitrary "recovery" figure of 1450
when that unnecessary goal will allow for the killing of over 1000
wolves. State and Federal governmental forces are apparently not going
to abide by the spirit of the Endangered Species Act in their efforts to
delist the wolf. The threats against returning the wolf to State
management are grave. No group working for the wolf or predators should
take comfort in what is happening in Minnesota. We are merely the first
in line targeted to lose protection for our wolves. Already Western
recovery goals are being manipulated under political pressures.
PLEASE SEND A REPLY E-MAIL TO me at [email protected]
and to [email protected], if you intend to remain a part of our
Coalition, or if your group is joining our coalition this year. Your
group is not obligated in any legal or financial way when joining this
coalition ... by joining you are stating that you support the position
statements and you support the survival of the Great Lake Wolves. If you
have any questions you may also call me Karlyn Berg at 218-245-3049 or
Linda Hatfield at 612-822-2720. For the sake of Minnesota's wolves we
hope we hear from you. Please forward to other groups that you think
would like to join.
