Commentary on Genesis 9:2-4
By Shmuel Asher - 1 Jan 2012

Shalom,

Outstanding!  Finally someone other than me is willing to give the Hebrew understanding of Genesis and animal killing/eating/sacrificing as it was originally meant prior to all the much later Levitical text manipulations which most people aren't aware of outside of post Babylonian orthodox Judaism.

Amazingly your words and explanations are almost, if not exactly written as I have written and spoke them for so many years now.

As a Rebbi coming from over 25 generations of Karaite scholars, I’m not well taken when charting these same waters.  In fact, some years ago I began a new extremely literal & corrected translation of Genesis & Exodus which I hope to have finished soon, it depicts this topic and much more which was corrupted by later Priests.  I am also finalizing a book on the subject of killing and eating from the original Aramaic/Hebrew perspective.

I attached the related  portions of my new Torah translation for your viewing. Thus you will see your not alone in that.  I hope to have it finalized and published this year.

The Ben Asher Torah
Genesis

1 In the beginning of The Eternal creating the heavens and the earth

2 when the earth was astonishingly empty with darkness upon the face of the deep; and the Eternals Presence hovered over the surface of the waters

3 The Eternal said: 'Let there be light.' And there was light.

4 The Eternal saw that the light was perfect; and The Eternal separated between light and the darkness.

5 The Eternal called the light (Yom) Day, and the darkness He called (Erev) Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day.

6 The Eternal said: 'Let there be a firmament in the middle of the waters, and let it separate between water and water.'

7 The Eternal made the firmament, and separated between the waters which were beneath the firmament, and the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so.

8 The Eternal called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.

9 The Eternal said: 'Let the waters beneath the heaven be gathered together into one area, and let the dry land appear.

10 And The Eternal called the dry land “Earth”, and to the gathering of waters HE called Seas; and The Eternal saw perfect order.

11 The Eternal said: 'Let the earth sprout vegetation; herbage yielding seed, fruit-trees yielding fruit, each containing its own seed on the earth.

12 that the earth would bring vegetation; herbage yielding seed after its kind, and trees yielding fruit, each seed after its kind; and The Eternal saw perfect order.

13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day.

14 And The Eternal said: 'Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to separate between the day and the night; and they will serve as signs, and for appointed times, and for days and years;

15 and they will serve for lights in the firmament of the heaven to shine upon the earth.

16 And The Eternal made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the days, and the lesser light to rule the night, the stars.

17 And The Eternal set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 to rule by day and by night, and to separate between the light and the darkness; and The Eternal saw perfect order.

9 And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day.

20 The Eternal said: 'Let the waters abound with crustaceans that crawl, with souls of life, and the birds that fly over the earth across the expanse of the heavens.'

21 Then The Eternal created the great mammals, and every living fish that glides, which filled the waters after their kind, and all four corners, birds of every kind; and The Eternal saw perfect order.

22 The Eternal said: 'Grow and multiply, and fill the waters that roar, and let birds fill the earth.' 23 And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day.

24 The Eternal said: 'Let the earth bring out living souls after their kind; Animal and reptiles, and beast of the land each after their kind.' And it was so.

25 The Eternal made the beast of the earth after their kind, and the animals after their kind, and every reptile of the ground after their kind; and The Eternal saw perfect order.

26 The Eternal said: 'Let us make the dry ground in our image, a reflection; husbandmen to the fish in the sea, the birds of the heavens, the animals, the beasts, and every reptile that creeps upon the earth.'

27 So, The Eternal created man in His image, in the image of The Eternal HE created him.

28 The Eternal formed the man from the dry ground; breathed into his nostrils the Soul of life; and man became a living soul. The Eternal made him to Grow, to multiply, fill the earth, to walk upon it, maintain husbandry over the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, and all life that moves on the land.'

29 The Eternal instructed: ' I give you every herbage yielding seed that is on the surface of the entire land, every tree that has seed yielding fruit – it will be yours for food,

30 and for every beast of the earth, and to every bird of the heaven, and to every thing that moves on the earth, wherein there is a living Soul of Life, every green herb is for food.' The Eternal saw all He had made and beheld perfect order. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

31 The heavens and the earth were finished, and all within it.

32 By the seventh day The Eternal completed His work which He had done; and He abstained from His occupation on the seventh day which He does.

33 The Eternal Set-apart the seventh day, and sanctified it; because on it, He abstained from all His work which He does.

34 These are the products of the earth when they were created on the day that The Eternal created the earth and heavens.                                 © 2010

Chapter 2

1 Initially; all the trees of the field were not yet grown, and all the herbage of the field had not yet sprouted; for The Eternal had not sent rain upon the earth; but a mist ascended from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground.

2 The Eternal planted a garden in Eden, to the east, and placed there the man whom He had formed.

3 The Eternal caused to sprout from the ground every tree that is pleasing to the sight, and good for food; also the tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and bad.

4 A river went out from Eden to water the garden; and from there it is divided, and became four rivers.

5 The name of the first is Pishon;

6 The second river is Gihon;

7 the third river is Hiddekel; and the fourth river is the Euphrates.

8 The Eternal placed the man in the garden within Eden to keep and guard it.

9 Then The Eternal instructed the man, saying: 'Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat;

10 but of the tree of knowledge of good and bad, you must not eat from; for on the day you eat of it, you will surely die.'

11 The Eternal said: 'It is not good that man is alone; I will make him a counterpart in his likeness.'

12 Now, The Eternal had formed out of the ground, every beast and animal of the field, and every bird of the heaven; and brought them to the man to see what he would call each one; and what ever the man called each living creature, that remained his name.

13 And the man assigned names to all animals and to the birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field, but found none bearing his likeness.

14 So, The Eternal cast a deep sleep upon the man; and He took of his *curve, and He created flesh in its place.

15 The Eternal fashioned the *curve that he took from the man, into his opposite, and He brought it to the man.

16 And the man said: 'This is bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh? This one will be called *Hawah, for from me was it fashioned.'

17 They were both naked, the man and woman, and did not perceive it.

* Extremely interesting here how HE used the Hebrew word (Tselah)-(Curve): and today we have the Double Helix Curve known to be the very DNA curve The Eternal One proliferates all life from.  In modern scientific terms, (The Woman) is called a (Stereo Isomer). An exact opposite, & reversed image of The Man.

* The Man named this new creation {Hawah} which translated means {Living One}. It should also be noted, verse-16 has been corrected by rendering it as a question and NOT a statement.  I base this on the fact that we don’t have any scripture prior to verse 16 proving that The Eternal One explained to the Man His process of creating the Woman prior to her creation, or during. And we also know that the Man could not have been aware of the creative process, since it is stated that he was in a comatose state. Therefore, he would not have been able or inclined to make such a statement of fact upon his initial sight of the woman. Therefore, it has to be correctly and logically rendered as a question.

Chapter 9

1 AHEYEH endowed Noah and his sons, and commanded: 'Grow, multiply, and fill the earth.

2 All beast of the earth, animals and all fowl of the air, all reptiles that crawl on ground, and all fish in the sea, have apprehension and regard for you; they are appointed to you.

3 Also the products of every living creature that moves on the land will be food for you; as the green herb I gave you all.

4 All flesh, with the soul within the blood, you will not eat.

5 Surely your spilled blood I will seek, your blood, where in lives your soul; from the hand of all living I will seek it for all the slain animals, and for the souls of all slain men.

6 Surely, in this image; AHEYEH, did not fashion man.

7 AHEYEH spoke to Noah, and to his sons with him;

8 Now see! I make My compact with you, and with your seed after you;

9 and with all living souls with you, the fowl, the animals, and every beast on the land with you; of all that go out of the ark, of all life on the land.

10 I confirm My compact with you; not all flesh will be destroyed again by flowing water; no more will a flood destroy the earth.'

11 AHEYEH said: 'This is the sign of the agreement that I make between Me and you, and all life with souls, with you, eternal and everlasting:

12 I set My *[unstrung] bow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the compact between Me and the earth.

13 It will be, when I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow is seen in the cloud,

14 that I will remember My compact, between Me and you, and every living soul of all flesh; and the waters will no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

15 And the bow will be in the cloud; and I will see it, that I remember the everlasting agreement between AHEYEH and every living soul of all flesh on the earth.'

16 And AHEYEH said to Noah: 'This is the sign of the compact that I have confirmed between Me and all flesh on the earth.'

 *Vs:13 – This is a long mistranslated concept; the Bow spoken of by The Eternal One is a bow of war! Not specifically or only a rainbow.  Also see Zech-9:13 for the continuation of this concept.
