Never think you are wrong in wanting to save the life of someone you love over someone you don't know. That would be like saying you believe that humans have more value than animals, and I think you know that's not what you really feel.
Since I can't live without my cat and there's plenty of strangers I can and will live without, it's not even a choice that I'd have to think about.
This assertion of superiority over animals is just a convenient excuse for humans to continue using and abusing animals for profit, pleasure or evil thrills.
Follow your heart, think for yourself and question what you've always been told.
