One definition of “life” is “the quality that distinguishes a vital
and functional being from a dead body.”
Then why do so many people who proclaim that they are “pro-life”
limit their concern to the “human pre-born”?
And why do so many of the same people say that they are for capital
punishment (another euphemism!) and, under the guise of “patriotism,”
enthusiastically support war?
If they are “pro-life” why do they consume flesh and dairy products
and eggs? The production of all of these “foods” involves killing that
is intrinsic to the industries’ survival: the slaughter for flesh
(obviously), the separation of the “veal calves” from their mothers, the
killing of the mother cows when their milk production decreases, the
trashing of male chicks…. And that is not counting the nightmarish
physical and emotional pain and suffering of the animals that are kept
alive and that are part and parcel of the industries’ everyday
functioning.
