A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Real Food for Thought – 21 January 2009
By Mary T. Hoffman

“Tenderness and mercy and gentility, and all the spiritual qualities that set man off so greatly from beasts of prey, are lacking in the lion, tiger, wolf and other carnivores. The claim that man has evolved to such a high mental plane and spiritual plane that he must have meat is exactly the opposite of the facts. He must crush and harden his higher nature in order to hunt and fish and prey.”
~ Dr. Herbert M. Shelton (1895–1985),
Father of Modern Natural Hygiene

So true! Reading the last word “prey” in the above quotation made me think of those who hunt and fish and “pray” (a little play on words!), especially those who are religious leaders and lead their flocks astray. I often wonder how they can claim to be believers in God and still continue to remain at such a low level of spiritual development. Surely, a true believer touched by the Holy Spirit of God must mature to the point of recognizing and living by His original intent and not just the concessions that He allowed because “the intent of man's heart is evil from his youth.” (Genesis 8:21)

As it says in Romans 1:20 “they are without excuse” and will be judged by a higher, stricter standard since, as Jesus says in His parable in Luke 12:48: “And from everyone who has been given much shall much be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more.”

These hunter/pastors may enjoy fame and fortune now in this fallen world, but Revelation 21:8 also makes it clear that “cowards,” “the cowardly submissive,” “all liars [those who knowingly convey untruth by word or deed, all of these shall have] their part in the lake that blazes with fire and brimstone. This is the second death.” (The Amplified Bible) Yes; killing the Creator’s creatures for fun and for acceptance by the hard-of-heart is being “cowardly” and “cowardly submissive.” And to risk eternal damnation is foolish, to say the least.

As Jesus warns in Matthew 7:22-23:

22 “Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’

23 “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness.’ ”

Living according to Genesis 1:29 is better for the whole earth – humans, nonhumans, and the environment.

29 “Then God said, “Behold I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you.”

In other words, go vegan! It’s that simple.
