Road Kill
By Virginia Khan

A little light went out today
Never mourned nor buried
Left to rot and decay
By the roadside
Where they all rush past
Smoke and speed
And a great big blast

Or run over oft so many times
you can't know
The little being that ran about
Now nothing left of it to show
Who it once was?

The furry little body
Still felt warm
As I picked up
Its lifeless form

Please be careful
Said its departing soul
Many like me live here
As you must know

But sometimes we're small and hard to see
Running across the road carefree
Not knowing that there in danger lies
Under speeding metal
Did you hear the cries
Of anguish?

We feel the pain
Just like you would
But can't speak the words
To be understood

As innocent as babes of humankind
Sometimes little ones we leave behind
None to feed them or to care!
Left bewildered, frightened, starving there

And that's not all
The BB gun
The steel trap jaws
Hurt maim and kill
Aren't against the law

Not a manmade law
But one we should feel
Within our hearts
Towards sentient beings
Of hoof and paw...
