Tell Youth the Truth About Milk and Dairy Products
by Mary T. Hoffman - 3 October 2007

Isn’t it strange that children are taught to tell the truth, but that grownups don’t have to live by the same standard of honesty?

It seems to be second nature for most adults to withhold the truth or to lie about some things when talking with youngsters. Yet children are expected to live by a higher standard, and rightly so – for their protection may depend on their open dialogue with those who care for them.

Hiding the truth about the cruelty that so much of their food represents just perpetuates the suffering of billions of farmed animals, as well as being a major contributor of greenhouse gases that devastate their environment.

Then there is the extremely important health issue: Study after study testifies to the fact that many people are lactose intolerant, and that dairy products are linked to many serious health problems. Yet the powerful dairy industry has a stranglehold on information dispensed to the public. Everywhere you turn, cow’s milk is practically revered! We are brainwashed from childhood. Here is an example:

As I write this I have before me a children’s booklet titled “My Friend the Cow” by Lois Lenski. On the first page, below the title and author, appears a drawing of a red barn and the following line: “1967, Copyright 1946, National Dairy Council, Chicago 60606.” This piece of propaganda was distributed to children in our public elementary schools. It is so full of distortions of the truth that it defies description! Here is just one illustration: a full page drawing in color showing a smiling farmer sitting on a 3-legged red stool milking a smiling, yellow cow; the opposite page says “Farmer Brown milks the cows …”

Do you see what I mean? For a very long time, the manipulators have been getting away with these lies and distortions while enriching themselves at the expense of the public’s health.

Truly, it is time to Tell Youth the Truth!
