Cassius Mankin, the adult male who on Valentine’s Day 2015 punched out
the eyes of an emu named Miss Molly, then strangled her to death, was
charged by the Comanche County Texas District Attorney’s office with Felony
Cruelty to Livestock Animals. Since then, Mankin’s trial date has been
repeatedly postponed. Most recently, he was scheduled to be tried for his
crime on Monday, February 29, but once again, it didn’t happen. United
Poultry Concerns was told by the District Attorney’s office this week that
Mankin’s new trial date is provisionally set for Monday, May 2.
UPC has urged prosecution of Cassius Mankin since February 2015. Our
supporters have rallied with phone calls and letters to the DA’s office
urging that a person so cruel as to put out the eyes of another living
creature and then kill her needs to be held accountable for his crime.
The long necks and excellent periscopic vision of emus enable them to survey
the land for miles in all directions at once. Emu parents incubate and raise
their young together. They are very gentle birds.

UPC will continue to urge prosecution of Cassius
Mankin for the felony animal cruelty with which he is charged.
