From Martin Havranek - 3 Mar 2005

Taking quotes from the bible to oppose eating animals seems a little bit strange when the same book prorogates the slaughtering of animals as an offer to God...

Or am I completely wrong in not just reading the useful parts?

Dear Martin:

Thank you for writing.

You're not completely wrong, but you have missed an important theological understanding.

When looking at flesh eating and other issues, we need to understand the difference between God's intent and perfection, and the corrupted state of the world, today. There was no death in Eden before the Fall and there is no death in heaven. Flesh eating came after the Fall, thus everything connected with killing another living being is part of the corruption and not part of God's intent.

Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:48 that we are to be perfect as our Father in heaven is perfect, and to pray for His heavenly will to be done on earth as it is in heaven (Matthew 6:10). We are instructed and encouraged to always seek that which is perfect and mature above the corrupted state of this world.
