Genesis 4:9 Bible Commentary
Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” And he said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
When God asked this question. He was most likely seeking Cain’s confession and repentance. Instead, Cain who knew that the Lord is all knowing, responded with an obvious lie, “I do not know”.
Then Cain seems to even reject God’s question by saying, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”
Some commentators have suggested that Cain was responding to God in an accusing way. He was saying that God never said that we were to be our brother’s keeper. I disagree, because in Genesis 1:28, God gave us the responsibility of being the protectors of His creation. And this would include being our brother’s keeper.
