During the current heat wave, my thoughts keep turning to the Lord’s creatures imprisoned by us. Those who are free as He designed — “wild,” as the world says — can at least search for shade, water, food, and shelter as the land grows hotter and drier. Many pant, rest, and slow down to survive, and some of these "wild" lives will succumb to the extreme temperatures. But His beloved creatures whom we confine, manipulate, and torment cannot seek even the most basic needs or comfort.
On this hot day — as on every day — these confined creatures will endure the routine violence and torture of our evil systems of “food production”: forced semen collection, forced impregnation, isolation, deprivation, restraint, mutilation, being hit, kicked, and abused, stolen young, their bodies and minds depleted prematurely, and then murdered, along with so many other atrocities hidden behind sterile packages of “fresh” flesh and other products that people enslaved to evil think they “need” to survive or to satisfy their lust for flesh and other products of evil.
Compassion asks more of humanity than concern from a distance. It asks us to see the hurting and hidden, to grieve what we have done, and to embrace a way of living that no longer depends on their suffering. And it asks each one of us who is an ethical vegan to speak out about how He has called us into this amazing and freeing grace. In this grace of ethical veganism, we have been shown and now KNOW the truth. And just as each one of us finally changed, a person of faith who receives the love of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit cannot remain willfully blind to the suffering of His creatures forever. Others will awaken and change too, as humanity slowly moves forward toward the Peaceable Kingdom. But today His creatures suffer because of those of us still asleep — and for many of these beloved creatures, today is all they have.
Please join me today — and every day — in praying for His creatures suffering in our hands, whether the temperature is hot, mild, or cold. And let us also pray for each person who is still asleep to their own choices and to the evil behind them: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” — Ephesians 6:12
