Genesis 4:1 – Bible Commentary
Now the man had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived and gave birth to Cain, and she said, “I have gotten a manchild with the help of the LORD.”
At first glance, the Genesis 4:1 verse seems to be a statement of fact about the birth of Adam’s and Eve’s first-born male child.
However, when we look at Genesis 5:4, we see that they had other sons and daughters. Could it be that Eve’s comment means that she gave birth to a girl or girls before Cain? We just don’t know. We are not told.
We are told that God formed Adam from the dust of the earth and Eve from Adams rib. Thus, Eve’s remark could also refer to the fact that Cain was formed in her.
Which is the correct answer? We just don’t know. They may be interesting from a theological standpoint. However, they should never pull us away from having a personal relationship with the Lord, and live according to God’s heavenly will.
