Today, I am sharing A Prayer at the Sacred Threshold, written for a friend's beloved Sonya who passed yesterday, July 21st, 2026. The prayer has been modified in the link below so it can be used by anyone—and may be helpful to you when a beloved furry family member is preparing to transition from this earthly life. It may be prayed aloud by the steward, a friend, or someone offering pastoral support, as a way of surrounding the beloved one with gratitude, tenderness, love, and the assurance that they will remain forever within the Creator’s loving care.
When we lose a beloved furry family member, the grief is real, sacred, and deserves our full attention. Please do not minimize it, rush through it, or allow others to make you feel that you should “move on” before your heart is ready. Give yourself the time and space to mourn and seek out people who will truly listen—people who understand that their life was precious; the bond was blessed, and the loss is profound.
And anticipatory grief can also be especially difficult as we watch a beloved family member grow older, become ill, or approach the end of earthly life. We may begin grieving while still trying to remain fully present, make compassionate decisions, and treasure the time that remains. During this sacred and painful season, be gentle with yourself, allow the grief to come as it comes, and seek support from those who will honor both your sorrow and the beloved life at the center of it. May the prayer bring comfort to you too.
