Deuteronomy 6:7 Bible Commentary
and you shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
This means that we should so internalize our love of God and living in the heavenly will of the Lord that everything we say and do is a part of our nature and is a witness to the world around us, beginning with those closest to us, our family; it’s a vital part of teaching our children for they see that we live by what we teach them.
This is part of an ancient Jewish commandment, but its message is universal, for to truly love God in this complete way, we must also love the whole of His creation (humans. animals, and the environment), too, which is a vital part of what we need to truly and believably teach our children.
John Wesley wrote “Whether he ‘sit in the house, or walk by the way,’ whether he lie down, or rise up, he is promoting, in all he speaks or does, the one business of his life.”
If we want a better life, and if we want our children to have a better life, then we must seek to gain in our understanding, our knowledge, and our wisdom of God continually.
We must work at doing better today than we did yesterday.
And if what we do is according to God’s heavenly will and what is written in His Word about love fulfilling the whole of the Bible, as Jesus taught us, we will prosper in all that we do, for the Lord Himself will be with us.
