Institutionalized Animal Cruelty – S: Joe Pagliuso & Bros. – 20111202

We find the following report very disturbing, because it involved not only repeated times that Joe Pagliuso & Bros. was involved in institutionalized animal cruelty, but a failure of the government to issue several citations for the referenced dates.
On 2 December 2011, Joe Pagliuso & Bros., Inc., slaughterhouse in Ontario, New York was inspected by the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), and cited for improperly stunning animals. The report stated:
On Friday December 2, 2011 I observed the following noncompliance. [newline]On the slaughter floor I observed 2 bovine shot once and not rendered unconscious until it was shot again. While the second shot was immediately after the first shot, according to Federal Regulation 9 CFR 313.16(a)(1), “The firearms shall be employed in the delivery of a bullet or projectile into the animal in accordance with this section so as to produce immediate unconsciousness in the animal by a single shot before it is shackled, hoisted, thrown, cast, or cut. The animal shall be shot in such a manner that they will be rendered unconscious with a minimum of excitement and discomfort” and 9 CFR 313.16(a)(3), “Immediately after the firearm is discharged and the projectile is delivered, the animal shall be in a state of complete unconsciousness and remain in this condition throughout shackling, sticking and bleeding.” [newline]On 11/17/2011, 11/22/2011, twice on 11/23/2011 and 11/28/2011 a second shot was required to bring a bovine, on each date, into a complete unconscious state.

Under a FOIA request for New York slaughterhouse inspection reports that were received, there were no reports for 17 Nov 2011, 22 Nov 2011, 23 Nov 2011, and even though there were two reports issued for 28 Nov 2011, neither of them reported this cited violation and the pain and suffering it caused, nor have we seen any corrective action. Joe Pagliuso & Bros. just seems to keep doing the same cruel things over and over again.
This totally unnecessary institutionalized animal cruelty must stop, and since the government seems unable or unwilling to stop it, we believe that all caring people must do something.
If we all peacefully speak out against all this cruelty, and stop eating or wearing any animal products, every one of us who is vegan takes money away from this violent killing industry, and serves as a witness of compassionate living to the world around us.
