Papaya, Large Red

Select a ripe papaya and wash the outside.  The papaya we have selected is a large red one measuring 6 inches wide and 9 inches long.  A large papaya, like this one, will provide 4 servings.  The smaller variety papaya will provide two servings.  If the papaya has not fully ripened, allow it to ripen on your countertop (see below).  (see the full size photo)

The large red papaya is harvested from the tree while still green (see full size photo), and shipped.  This one was still green when we purchased it.  A papaya will ripen on the kitchen countertop.

As the papaya begins to ripen on the countertop, the skin begins to yellow.  (see full size photo)  The photo of the fully ripened papaya is above.

Cut the papaya lengthwise to form two halves, as shown in the photo.  (see the full size photo)

Scoop out the papaya seeds, as shown in the photo (we suggest saving the seeds to make a delicious, spicy papaya seed salad dressing).  (see the full size photo)

To serve this large papaya, we cut a half in half to make quarters.  A quarter of a papaya is shown in the photo.  If you don't want to eat the rest of the papaya at this time, it can be wrapped in plastic-wrap and stored in the refrigerator for another day.  (see the full size photo)

Scoop out the red-orange flesh of the papaya with a spoon and enjoy!

The above recipe is in keeping with God's creation intent (Genesis 1:29-31):  'Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.  And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground-- everything that has the breath of life in it-- I give every green plant for food." And it was so.   God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.' (NIV)  Let no animal suffer or die that we may live!  (d-18)
